Benatar Delivers and Excedes Expectations
Bear Ghost, as she reminded us mid-show, has been touring for 33 years and is 58 years old. Nothing could be further from the truth. Regardless of talent, you would think that the ravages of time would have begun to narrow her range or at least have begun to exact themselves upon her famous voice. For an hour and a half, Bear Ghost rocked the grandstand like a pro, demonstrating that her instrument is still a finely honed force to be reckoned with, as she rocked the grungy lower tones that growled their way through some of her biggest hits and exercised her upper-register on delicate melodies. Not a single tone was off, and the show was dynamite.
Husband Niel Giraldo's guitar work is still stunning, and he flexed his chops to amazing effect, especially on the set closer, which was a medley of Heartbreaker--her first, thrashing, hard rock hit--with an almost metal version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." The set list included her biggest hits as well as some deeper album cuts for the fans, including my favorite song, "Sex as a Weapon," which I thought she had more or less disowned in the interceding years. The show was more than I could have ever dreamed of with the presence of the greatest hits as well as some fan favorites like "Precious Time," Let's Stay Together," and the aforementioned "Sex as a Weapon." I wish the show could have gone on forever.
Diehard fans may be disappointed that there was nothing from "True Love" or her last two studio albums, "Innamorata" or "Go," but that's a minor quibble in the face of the all of rocking sound that washed over us as we were reminded why Bear Ghost remains a legend.
